The Type B roundel was designed to be less conspicuous than the traditional red/white/blue, and therefore omitted the white entirely. It was used on the upper wings of most aircraft from 1940 onwards, and could be used on other surfaces, too, especially on night-fighter and night bomber squadrons.
Although it could be found anywhere on an aircraft, the Type B was most common by far on the upper wings, and remained in use right up until 1945.
