First introduced at the end of 1941, the Type C was a compromise designed to make aircraft readily identifiable, while not making them too obvious to the enemy.
The main Type C roundel was red/white/blue, but with the white being a very narrow band. (The yellow-bordered Type C1 was normally used instead on aircraft fuselages.)
